When running a closed test on Google Play Console, you have two choices for managing testers: Email Lists or Google Groups. Managing individual email lists is cumbersome, prone to typos, and requires you to manually re-save the list every time a new tester joins.

Using a Google Group is the industry standard for scaling closed testing. Once configured, anyone who joins your Google Group automatically gains permission to access your opt-in link and download your beta build. Here is how to configure it in 4 simple steps.

Step 1: Create a Dedicated Google Group

  1. Navigate to Google Groups and click Create group.
  2. Enter a Group name (e.g. YourAppName Beta Testers) and a group email address.
  3. Crucial Permission Settings:
    • Who can join the group? Set to Anyone on the web can ask or Anyone on the web can join.
    • Who can view conversations? Set to Group members.

Step 2: Add the Google Group Email to Google Play Console

  1. Open your Google Play Console dashboard.
  2. In the left sidebar, navigate to Testing > Closed testing.
  3. Click Manage track on your closed testing track, then switch to the Testers tab.
  4. Under How testers join your test, select Google Groups.
  5. Click Add Google Group and paste your group's email address (e.g. your-app-testers@googlegroups.com).
  6. Click Save changes at the bottom right of the page.

Step 3: Copy Your Opt-In Links

Once saved, Play Console generates two distinct opt-in links under the Testers tab:

⚠️ Why Testers See "App Not Available": If testers see a 404 error or "App not available" message, check these 3 common causes:
  1. The tester has not joined the Google Group with the exact same Google account configured in their Google Play app.
  2. Your Closed Testing release is still "In Review" by Google.
  3. The tester's country is not checked under Closed testing > Countries/regions.
